This week, after making the difficult decision to move my grandmother into memory care, we began clearing out her apartment and collecting her things. What struck me most during the search was the number of items I found that simply wouldn’t be created today. From a vintage metal Ronson lighter/cigarette case, to the detailed metal compact mirrors, her things serve as a reminder that planned obsolescence is a relatively recent phenomenon.

As creators and influencers, we each have some level of responsibility as to what we promote. And whilst idea that adding dozens upon dozens of new garments to your wardrobe on a regular basis has become normalized, it is certainly not normal.

As we know, overconsumption is a huge driver of the climate crisis. With the tipping point we’re currently at with our planet, it’s great to see individuals feel empowered to take action against this new normal. However…

So, I’ve officially done it. After challenging myself to a number of Buy Nothing and No New Things challenges, I completed my biggest one yet in 2024: only buying 5 new pieces of clothing over the course of the year.

With just about a month left of my sustainable fashion challenge - where I’m only buying 5 new clothing items over the course of the year - I’ve accumulated enough lessons to take me to the EOY finish line.
